Anti-Idling Solution Pays For Itself Quickly
Based on the current usage of diesel fuel, overnight truck idling costs an enormous amount of money. With margins in the trucking industry being squeezed tighter than ever, every dollar saved on fuel goes right to the bottom line. The NITE (No-Idle Thermal Environment) system from Bergstrom Inc. can pay for itself. What's more, owner-operators and fleet managers can save thousands of dollars a year on each truck from reduced engine idling.
The NITE system includes a high-efficiency air conditioner and rechargeable power source to keep the sleeper compartment cool in hot weather. In cold weather, the NITE heating system keeps the sleeper area warm all night on less than 1/10 gallon of diesel fuel.
It is estimated that the fuel-consumption rate for an idling truck engine is 1.2 gallons per hour. Transportation analysts point out that in any given year it is not uncommon for long-haul truck drivers to idle more than 1,800 hours which can add up to $3,000 to $4,000 a year in fuel costs. Engine wear and maintenance due to idling adds at least $250 to that total.
'Each hour the NITE system is in use saves about a gallon to a gallon and a half of fuel because it is many times more efficient than a large idling diesel engine,' according to Joe Nett, director of marketing for Bergstrom's Aftermarket Group. 'The NITE system also extends the life of the engine and increases the mileage between oil changes.
